Where We Find Ourselves: The Work & Life of a Black Photographer in North Carolina

The Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room welcomes award-winning authors, Margaret Sartor and Alex Harris who edited Where We Find Ourselves. The book captures the work of 19th century, itinerant portraitist Hugh Mangum. The latter took photographs in North Carolina and Virginia during the rise of Jim Crow. His clientele were both racially and economically diverse. Mangum’s forgotten glass plate negatives were discovered in the 1970s in a barn slated for demolition. The treasure trove of images showcase a world long forgotten.
